The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has reaffirmed its determination to intensify efforts against forgery, impersonation and the unlawful use of government identities, following the submission of its interim report on the alleged Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC).
The commission said the investigation underscores the importance of preserving the credibility of public institutions by ensuring that every government agency, appointment and official document can be independently verified through established legal and administrative processes.
According to the ICPC, investigators carried out a comprehensive review of records from relevant government institutions before arriving at their conclusions. The agency stated that the evidence gathered did not support claims that the purported council was a legally established Federal Government institution or that it had received official presidential approval to operate.
The anti-graft commission further noted that the findings highlight the need for greater vigilance among public institutions, private organisations and members of the public when dealing with individuals claiming to represent government agencies. It stressed that due diligence remains essential in preventing fraudulent schemes that rely on forged documents and false official titles.
The commission also urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to strengthen collaboration by developing more efficient systems for verifying appointments, government correspondence and institutional mandates. It said improved information-sharing among agencies would significantly reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future.
In addition, the ICPC said the case serves as a reminder that no individual is above the law and that anyone found to have forged official documents, misrepresented government authority or deceived the public would be prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.
The commission reiterated that its anti-corruption mandate extends beyond investigation and prosecution to promoting institutional reforms capable of preventing future abuses. It expressed confidence that implementing its recommendations would strengthen public confidence in government institutions and reinforce the principles of transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
